League News

The Towne Club is off to their best start in years, and manager Harvey Soolman couldn't be more pleased. With only 2 players, Corey Pondes (.393) & Dan Merzel (.417), hitting above .300, the pitching has been outstanding, with a team ERA of 1.58. Pitchers Mike O'Brien (4-0), Mike Stefaniak (2-1), Yulkin German (1-0), & Adam Merzel (1-0) are doing the bulk of the pitching. Harvey has found the formula of winning the close ones so far, with 4 one run games and 2 two run games chalked up in the win column. On Wednesday, June 18th, Grossman Marketing pitcher Anthony Lauretto brought the Towne Club express to a halt, giving up only 1 hit in 6 2/3 innings, handing Harvey Soolman his first defeat of the season 2-1 at Stewart Diamond, after winning 10 straight. Grossman's Jim Klosek tripled in the bottom of the 6th, and Jeff Bizinkauskas squeezed him in for the game winner. Mike Stephaniak pitched well in defeat, giving up only 2 hits in 6 innings.

Towne Club lefthander Yulkin German pitched the 2nd no-hitter of the young season, shutting out Hines/ADSL 8-0 at Dick Casey Field in Dorchester. German, a former farmhand of the Boston Red Sox, Struck out 9, including the last 5 batters in the game. On the season so far, Yulkin has pitched 16 innings, giving up only 4 hits, has not given up an earned run, and struck out 23. One of the big reasons the Towne Club is riding an 10-1 record out of the gate.

Greg Digirolamo, former Manager of the Palmer Club, will be the chairman of the 9th Annual Dick Clegg-Howie Stein Memorial Golf tournament, which will be played at the Easton Country Club on Monday, July 28th, 2008. Please refer to the Golf Tournament link for more information.

Beginning June 22, 2008, the league will be playing Sunday afternoon double headers at beautiful Govoni Field, on the campus of Babson College. Please check the updated schedule.

Congratulations to Jay Turner of the Stockyard (MIT) who pitched the first no hitter of the season on May 30th, 2008, beating the defending champion Padres 10-0 at Stewart Diamond.

Irish Village pitcher Mike Regan, 2005 recipient of the Jean Yawkey/BPL College Scholarship, has completed his senior year at Trinity College in Hartford, Conn., and what a season it was. Trinity went undefeated during the regular season, 34-0, won the NESCAC tournament, and earned a place in the NCAA Division 3 National Baseball Tournament in Grand Chute, Wisconsin. The Trinity Bantams continued to win, until only 2 teams were left standing. Trinity and John Hopkins University.

On May 27th, 2008, Trinity was 44-0, needing 1 win to cop the national title. The John Hopkins Blue Jays won that game 4-3, for the Bantams first loss of the season. In a double elimination tournament, the same 2 teams met with the national title on the line. John Hopkins took a 1 run lead into the bottom of the 9th. Trinity came back to score two runs to win 5-4, becoming national champions, and finishing with a 45-1 record. Mike was called in to pitch the last 1 and 1/3 innings, and was the winning pitcher in the biggest game in Trinity baseball history. Mike finished the season 9-0, with an era of 1.51.

Another member of the Trinity Bantams, shortstop Tom DiBenedetto, was a Park League All Star in 2006, also playing with Irish Village. Tom was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the June, 2008 major league draft, in the 39th round, the 1,132 player to be chosen.
